Welcome - Nau Mai Haere Mai
Our little rural school is nestled amongst a rich history that draws visitors from near and far. Our backdrop is one of the beautiful Kaipara, with vistas of inlets surrounded by farmland. Matakohe is a community built on the dairy and kauri industries. Schooling in the area can boast of a 155 year legacy and the local Kauri Museum depicts a resilient community founded on the reliance on land and sea for survival and prosperity.

I feel privileged to have been given the responsibility of leading Matakohe School into the future. We are a small rural school catering for 40 children from years 1 - 8. We are situated on a picturesque, elevated site overlooking the Kaipara Harbour. With two fields, a bike track, swimming pool, school hall, native tree plantings, neighbouring paddocks with cows and sheep, and the world famous Kauri Museum at our fingertips, we feel pretty blessed to be caretakers of this little slice of paradise. Collectively we are working towards establishing a positive, rich learning environment that allows us to teach a scaffolded learning model based on our local resources to instil motivation and a connection with who we are and where we live, so as children graduate, they can go out into the world armed with knowledge, courage and inspiration, prepared for their future.
Our motto “Grow together - Learn together” encompasses our mission to establish and sustain a team of confident and capable leaders and learners who embrace ako.
Our goal is to see each child flourish and reach their full potential while engaged in meaningful experiences. The staff here are devoted to nurturing relationships and creating learning opportunities that encourage curiosity and promote deeper thinking. We envelop our learners in rich opportunities tailored to suit individual needs. Our school values are drawn out of the heart of the history of this area : KAURI. It has become an acronym for what we practise in our school community.
Welcome to our journey. I hope you enjoy looking through our school site and would warmly welcome any visitors to come and see just what it is we do here at Matakohe School.
